I’ve Got Plenty Of?

In the Autumn of 1978, Kurt received a call from dear Lehman Engel, a veteran conductor with over a hundred Broadway shows to his credit and a Gershwin expert. He was contracted to do a Gershwin recording and concert of both Lady Be Good and Porgy and Bess in Antwerp, Belgium, in December of that year. He was searching for two men and two women who could sing both the light Broadway melodies of Lady Be Good and the dramatic roles in Porgy and Bess. Long story short, Bill Swiggart, Marti Rolph, Anita Darian and Kurt were hired. They recorded the complete score and libretto of Lady Be Good for National Public Radio and then performed Porgy and Bess (yes, Kurt sang Porgy) with a chorus of 60 “zangers” and an orchestra with 80 “muzikents.” Quite an experience.
